What Am I Doing?

This is the first post on my new blog. This is (hopefully) going to be a place where I recount my birding excursions. Opportunistic? Yeah, I rarely go on trips with the sole purpose of birding, so most of my sightings are while doing other endeavors. Walking the dog, grocery shopping, paddle boarding, hiking, commuting to work, whatever. I was inspired by two events that happened in the space of two days recently. First, I found an old bird journal (I started but sputtered out) recounting one of my favorite solo trips from my youth. Second, I walked my dog down to the riverbed to let her roam off-leash and my birding experience was enough to compel me to write about it.

I guess I was also inspired by something suggested to me last year – the 5MR birding idea where you keep track of bird sightings within a 5 mile radius of your home. I started it, but as is my wont I quickly lapsed due to the repetition boring me senseless. My hope is that I push through this year and hopefully find fulfillment in the daily watching of birds instead of counting on the thrill of listing.

So most of my posts will be a walkthrough of my experience, peppered with my thoughts as the trip unfolded. If the past is any indication I will probably post a few times and then forget about it.
